2012 is going to be an interesting year. December 21, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar, and some think it’s going to be the end of the world.

The sun’s magnetic field will cause massive earthquakes and floods, most of the population will be wiped out, and Tupac will resurrect from the dead.

At least that’s what some people are saying.

Others believe the completion of the great cycle of the 13th B’ak’tun, a period of almost 52,000 years, will be a time for reflection and celebration as a new age unfolds.

2012 is an important time to travel no matter what you believe. Go anywhere and see how communities around the world are bringing in this change.

1. International Yoga Festival:

When: March 1-7, 2012

Where: RISHIKESH, INDIA (Parmarth Niketan Ashram)

What: The Beatles put Rishikesh on the map when they attended a transcendental meditation training in 1968, which helped change Western attitudes about Indian spirituality.

When: March 8-11

Where: SAN IGNACIO, BELIZE

6. Annular Solar Eclipse:

When: May 20 (May 21 in the Eastern Hemisphere)

Where: CHINA, JAPAN, WESTERN US & CANADA

What: An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the sun’s light. An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region thousands of kilometres wide. The eclipse will be visible through the Pacific Ocean from northern China, Japan, California, and the Western United States.

7. Lake Atitlán Challenge Marathon

When: May 25-29

Where: PANAJACHEL, GUATEMALA

What: The Marathon is organized around a standard 42 km/26 mile race and incorporates other sporting activities, which include a ½ marathon, an adult and kids fun run and a cayuco (native canoe) race and other activities around the lakeshore.

Lake Atitlán is a volcanic caldera and the deepest lake in Central America. It is home to many vibrant, traditional Mayan cultures. The marathon is scheduled to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar.

8. June Solstice:

When: June 13-21

Where: MACHU PICCHU, PERU
